Terrace Outcomes

Listed below are the broad outcomes between July 1997 and March 2011 of every person who has completed the Primary Programme and gone onto the Terrace stage at Charis and left.

During the twelve years since the Terrace started 68 people have moved on. 58 people completed and left clean and sober.48 were rehoused into their own flats and 5 returned home. 10 people relapsed and were discharged.

Some define "success rate" in terms of completion of programme. Under this definition the "success rate" is 85%. We don't! Here are some futher details.
Of the 68 people, as far as we know, a total of 29 people went on to relapse to varying degrees. For 7 people this meant death. Of the other 22, 16 relapsed but went back into either residential or non-residential treatment. We have lost contact with the other 6.39 of the 68 people have not relapsed at all as far as we know. 27 have full time work. 13 have part time work / voluntary work / study. 2 have been diagnosed with mental health problems, one is chronically ill and one has retired.

All but eight of the above were of no fixed abode (homeless). The duration of addiction to drug and / or alcohol is between 10 and 30+ years for each individual. For those who remain abstinent, re-offending is, as far as we know, nil.

The deaths of 9 people through relapse is an indication that many more would die were it not for rehabilitation projects like Charis.

The above information only shows certain 'hard' outcomes. There are many other 'soft' outcomes which are difficult to measure such as emotional healing, repairing of relationships, peace of mind, spiritual and social development. All of the 68 without exception have shown significant improvement in most of these areas. For many, the time spent at Charis turns out to be the time when they felt most cared for in their lives.
